The Institute of Sociology at National Tsing-Hua University was established in 1998. The Institute of Sociology sets its goal as training students, who, sensitive to the impulse of the Taiwanese society and well-versed in critical thinking, are able to make contributions in all walks of life. We emphasize the ability to raise sociological questions, the ability to answer them, and the ability of social practice. Our curriculum designs aim at providing rigorous training on substantive areas of sociology, cultivating concerns for local societies and to familiarize with other societies outside Taiwan for comparison perspective, and to combine scholarship with life experiences. We specialize in four areas of studies in sociology: economy, politics, gender, and culture. In addition to Taiwanese society, contemporary Chinese society is another particular focus of our research concerns.
