The Department of Mathematics offers undergraduate programs in pure and applied mathematics to provide the students with a fundamental and extensive mathematical training. Courses are available to the mathematics majors who wish to pursue and advanced degree in various areas.
The department also offers master and doctoral degree programs. Programs emphasize on the study and research in both pure and applied mathematics. Courses offered include algebra, number theory, algebraic topology, Lie theory, real and complex analysis, functional analysis, differential geometry, differential equations, probability, statistics, numerical analysis, matrix theory and computations, dynamical systems, mathematical biology, game theory and operation research etc.
The Department of Mathematics of NTHU has very good reputation both by the research of the faculty and the works of alumni. Our alumni have good reputation in various fields. The class of 1968 alumni H. T. Kung, 1972 alumni C. S. Cheng and 1974 alumni R. S. Tsay are Sinica Academicians. Four other alumni were presidents of other universities and many alumni are professors of universities in Taiwan.
