We offer a broad selection of courses from beginning German to advanced courses on German literature, culture, and film. Students may earn a B.A. degree in German with eight advanced courses beyond the second year. A German minor entails just four advanced courses beyond the second year. German degrees, either the major or minor, can be combined with majors in pre-law, pre-med, journalism, finance, art history, and other majors to enhance your academic profile and give you an edge in future job searches. We also offer a very successful six-week summer program in Weimar, Germany, that gives students an opportunity to sharpen their skills in speaking German and get to know German culture first-hand. In addition to a course in German, students typically take a course that may be applied to their Cultural Formations requirements. They also have opportunities to travel widely and take part in a series of field trips to major cities such as Berlin, Dresden, and Leipzig and Munich. Studying German: With a population of 83 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous country in Europe. German is also the official language of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. In addition it is the native language of significant numbers of people living in northern Italy, eastern Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, eastern France, and in areas if Eastern Europe. It ranks number three among foreign languages taught throughout the world and is the second most popular foreign language taught in Europe and Japan, after English. Germany is an economic dynamo with the third strongest economy in the world and the distinction of being the world’s number one export nation. Knowing German can give you a leg up on employment opportunities: German companies employ 700,000 people in the United States, and U.S. companies have created a comparable number of jobs in Germany. Germany has been a leader in electronic technology since the 1950’s, and Germans maintain a preeminent position on the Internet. With its 8 million Internet subdomains, Germany’s domain .de is second only to the extension .com. Germany has an incredibly rich cultural heritage, including some of the most renowned writers and composers in the world and a long history of famous and influential thinkers in philosophy, psychology, history, mathematics, and the sciences. Knowing German allows you to experience these major figures of Western culture directly and with a greater sense of their cultural context, without the distorting filter of translation.
