The Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture Study Program at Al-Azhar University Indonesia (BMKT UAI) was established as a manifestation of institutional commitment to play an active role in the dynamics of global communication and cooperation, especially with China which is currently showing rapid development in various strategic fields, such as social, political, cultural, economic, and industrial. The establishment of this study program was also inspired by the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad SAW who encouraged his followers to seek knowledge even as far as China, and is in line with the spirit of strengthening national unity and harmony, including with the ethnic Chinese community in Indonesia.
The BMKT UAI study program was initially established in 2004 as the Chinese Literature Study Program. In line with the development of science, the needs of the workforce, and the increasingly dynamic demands for graduate competencies, this study program was then transformed into the Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture Study Program. This change emphasizes the orientation of the BMKT UAI study program in producing graduates who not only have a mastery of spoken and written Mandarin, but also are equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the socio-cultural, business, and diplomatic aspects of China. These competencies provide strategic added value in bridging the reciprocal relationship between Indonesia and China in various sectors.
Currently, the UAI BMKT Study Program is continuously developing collaborative networks with various Chinese community organizations, government agencies, and other partners, both domestically and internationally. The UAI BMKT Study Program has also produced quality alumni who are active in various fields, including government agencies, educational institutions, national and multinational private companies, the industrial sector, and as entrepreneurs. In addition, several alumni continue their master's studies (S2) at various renowned universities in China, such as Tsinghua University, Fujian Normal University, Yunnan Normal University, Beijing Capital University, and others.
