Midwives are responsible for the care of women, babies and their families prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, labour, birth and the early infancy period. The University of Newcastle has a holistic approach to the study of midwifery, with an emphasis on health promotion and clinical practice. The Bachelor of Midwifery degree is designed to sequentially build midwifery knowledge and skills. In the first-year, students study courses in fundamental concepts of the midwifery profession and normal pregnancy and birth psychophysiology. This course is only available for domestic students.
