Founded in 2004, the University of Niwa (UoN) is a faculty governed not-for-profit private university. It has expanded both in size, from 1,200 to 6,500 students, and in the number and diversity of the programmes it offers. Construction is underway for a new state-of-the-art campus to reflect and support this growth.
UoN is located 140km from the national capital of Muscat in the interior region of Al-Dakhiliya, near the historic former capital of Nizwa; one of the oldest cities in Oman. It was once a centre of trade, religion, education and art. The main tourist attractions in the city are Nizwa Fort, the traditional market (Souq) and famous water stream Falaj Daris.

Admission requirements depend on the programme of study, but in general require a copy of the candidate’s credentials and language proficiency. For undergraduate programmes, a minimum score of 65% in secondary level certification is required and an English proficiency of IELTS 6 or equivalent is required for postgraduate programmes.
The UoN campus has 27 large and medium-sized lecture halls, 86 classrooms, 30 computer labs, 70 teaching labs, 27 research labs, 20 academic support facilities, a main library, three study areas, three student rest areas, an indoor sports facility, a multi-purpose hall, an open-air 7,500 seat amphitheater, over 800 offices, five restaurants and cafeterias, a supermarket, over 1,200 car parking spaces and 1,693 beds at the student accommodation facility. UoN is the first non-profit higher education institution in the Sultanate of Oman, with an experienced international faculty. It is a fully bilingual, English and Arabic education, institution. The main language of teaching is English, however they have educational programmes that are taught in Arabic as well as a Foreign Language Department (French and German languages).
They have a diverse student population of over 6,000 students, 80% of whom are women and 6% are international undergraduate students, and host Arabic-language students from over ten elite American universities, including NYU, Princeton, and Yale. UoN also cooperates academically with 13 international institutions, including the University of Wisconsin System.

Since its inception, the guiding philosophy of UoN has been to provide students with high quality education that prepares them to contribute meaningfully to the economic, artistic and aesthetic growth of the country. Graduates, irrespective of their majors, are expected to be capable lifelong learners with skills in numeracy, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. UoN alumni will possess an appreciation of their culture, including values on which it is founded and shared values of humanity in general.
UoN has student-run clubs, groups and organisations that allow students to get involved in the university and local community. There are also many university-sponsored activities, including guest lecturers and trips for personal and professional development, as well summer study abroad programmes and other international study and internship opportunities.
Students are supported through a state of-the-art library, IT resources and services, and academic support centers such as The Writing Center, the Student Support Fund, that assists students to adequately provide continuous financial support, and an Entrepreneurship Center.
Accommodation services are ensured for students on-and-of camps. The on-campus eight accommodation units cater only to female students with a capacity of 1,733 beds. On-and-off campus accommodation is supervised by in-house experienced staff who are available 24 hours a day.
Transportation services are provided to students on a daily basis from their off-campus accommodation to the campus, as well as for academic or field visits and recreational trips. Additionally, a transportation service is provided to students requiring medical facilities.
UoN has a Center for Career Counselling and Alumni to help foster the university’s relationships with alumni, industries and employers through hosting job fairs, soft skills workshops and Joint College, Employers and Alumni Workshops. The centre conducts regular alumni surveys to gauge their satisfaction, organises training programmes and invites graduates to participate in university cultural and social events.
