In this combined degree, you can expect to develop a strong proficiency in spoken Italian in addition to firm grounding in Italian culture, society, history and literature and a grounding in the literature and culture of the Classical world of Greece and Rome. The inclusion of a year in Italy provides the opportunity to directly apply your language skills and experience first-hand Italian life and culture. Why study this course? Italy is home to one of the most prominent ancient civilisations and languages of the world; much of contemporary western culture and systems are rooted in the advances that were made across this country's rich history. This four-year combined degree course is designed to provide you both with a sound understanding of fundamental themes of classical cultures and with an in-depth knowledge of Italian language and culture. The two parts of the course complement each other well and modules are designed to encourage you to reflect on literary, historical and genre-based approaches to classical cultures and how these relate to Italian language, literature and culture. After the course A global market demands language skills; by the time you graduate, you can expect to be able to write and speak fluently in Italian - an immensely useful skill to have. The experience of studying or working abroad distinguishes you from non-language graduates, providing evidence of self-reliance, adaptability and enterprise. Careers of recent Italian graduates range from translating, teaching and research to marketing, financial services (London Capital Group), the international art business (Christie’s), business, journalism and the fashion and travel industries. Recent graduates in Classical Studies have found work with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Museum, Oxford University, the BBC, in information services and in public relations. Others have gone into teaching, publishing or further study including law conversion courses, MAs and PhDs.
