The MediaCentre’s cinema at St Peter’s Campus in Sunderland has undergone a £1.3million transformation to create a state-of-the-art facility which officially opened to students and the public, offering screenings of independent films.
A new £11.4million campus for the University of Sunderland in London has been opened close to Canary Wharf following more than 10-years of success for the University’s campus in the capital.
Work has been completed on the John Dawson Drug Discovery and Development Research Institute at City Campus in Sunderland. The Institute was created following a £5million donation from former student John Dawson and his wife, Sam.

Tuition fees
The University offers a wide range of bursaries and scholarships. The support includes:
· University of Sunderland bursaries: These are three-year bursaries ranging from £500 to £3,000. Priority is given to students from groups currently under-represented in higher education. These include Gypsies, Travellers, Roma, Showmen and Boaters; asylum seekers and refugees; carers; students from lower income households; and mature students.
· We Care bursaries: We offer £2,500 per year of continuous study for students who are care-experienced or estranged from both parents/carers.
· School of Medicine bursaries: We offer a range of bursaries including free accommodation and cash bursaries for students with a low household income or from areas with low participation in higher education.

Through the University’s scholarships, we reward the academic achievements of our students. The support includes:
· University of Sunderland Scholarships: Up to 130 scholarship awards available, each valued at £3,000. Our scholarships reward students with the highest increase in their academic achievement between their GCSE grades and their level three qualification resultts.
· University of Sunderland Esports Scholarships: These scholarships provide a generous support package worth £2,000 for students with a passion for esports. We aim to support students to fulfil their potential while studying an eligible full-time course.
· Philanthropic Scholarships: These scholarships are made available through the philanthropy of our alumni, staff, and friends of the University. They are available at a variety of levels and support students to achieve their goals in areas of excellence, experience, and employability.
· Elite Sports Scholarships: The University supports elite student athletes who are performing at an advanced level. The scholarships enable students to fulfil their athletic potential whilst studying at our institution, by providing financial support and opportunities for personal development.

The University’s Centre for Graduate Prospects assists students to build employability skills. Tailored work-integrated learning and student innovation opportunities are integrated into academic programmes to build student self-efficacy.
The CfGP's primary mission is to support students and graduates, helping them transform their potential into exceptional career opportunities and entrepreneurial ventures. By collaborating closely with employers, staff and the broader community, we ensure our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel in today's competitive landscape.
With its clear focus on applied and vocational activities, the University’s courses are designed to prepare students for a good career in their chosen profession. Well over 60% of undergraduate students are on courses that require a professional placement across areas such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and teaching.
A range of Work Integrated Learning activities are embedded into the fabric of courses, including placements and internships, live projects and student knowledge exchange opportunities with businesses and other organisations, whilst the generous support of Santander Universities provides 15 funded internships per year for students to further develop their skills with local company.
Strategic alliances with the local International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) and key employers including Nissan, provide a range of opportunities for students to experience work in the local advanced manufacturing and automotive industries ahead of graduation.
Engagement with civic partners, such as Sunderland Business Improvement District (Sunderland BID), provides unique opportunities to work with local industry associations on shared challenges and projects, which enhance awareness of graduate career opportunities in the retail sector.
A unique collaboration with the North East Hotels Association (NEHA), provides business and hospitality students with industry-focused, professional insights and valuable contacts for future employment.
Our partnership with Creo Comms, an alumna-owned local communications agency, provides degree relevant project work for students across the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries via Sunderland Creatives Agency. To date, our students have completed over 800 hours across 83 client projects thanks to this partnership.
Sunderland Business School prides itself on its engagement with the local small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) community. With every module aligned to a real business, students benefit from exposure to industries from accounting to hospitality, both in and out of the classroom. Through global partnerships with organisations such as US firm White Lodging, students gain highly desirable experience of living and working in a different country through an international placement year.
From 2024/25, every undergraduate student can apply for a placement year with industry.
