Mental illness is common in society, it is to what extent it impacts one socially, occupationally, and otherwise. The trend of mental illness is rising nationally and globally, affecting millions annually. The degree to which services are available is dependent on the presence of highly trained and skilled practitioners in psychiatry. The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP ) at UTA is prepared to function in the role of a mental health practitioner who provides medication management and psychotherapeutic interventions to those with all mental illnesses, including those with serious mental illness and addiction, and within the lifespan populations of children, adults, and the elderly. The PMHNP is also prepared to provide this care in a variety of settings including inpatient psychiatric institutions, community offices and facilities, as well as forensic institutions. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) board certification with recognition by the Texas Board of Nursing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
