This program is designed to provide systematic research training in the areas of neuroscience and behavior. Research, coursework, and training are interdepartmental and involve faculty from the departments of psychology, neurology, neurological surgery, and the University-wide Neuroscience Program. In addition to departmental core courses, students in this program are expected to take courses in neuroscience/behavioral medicine/health psychology within the department, and relevant coursework (e.g., neuroanatomy, physiology, pharmacology, molecular neuroscience immunology) at the medical school. Research within the program emphasizes the use of contemporary neuroanatomical, electrophysiological, and behavioral techniques designed to examine neural bases of behavior and the role the nervous system plays in disease processes. Courses offered with health content include Psychopharmacology, Behavioral Medicine, Stress, Emotion, and Motivation, Psychoneuro-immunology, and Neuropsychology. Students also receive course credit for research leading to the master's thesis and the doctoral dissertation.
