The degree program becomes highly competent music education researchers, music teacher educators, and leaders in the music education profession. Research is at the heart of the Ph.D. program in music education. Students earn a cognate in research methodology and take advanced seminars in qualitative and quantitative research. All students must write three publishable professional papers as a part of the qualification for candidacy. Additionally, students complete a pre-dissertation research project and a doctoral dissertation. In terms of courses, core requirements of this degree program include doctoral seminars, college music teaching, history and philosophy of music education, and music research. A number of exciting music education electives are also available, including music assessment, music in childhood, music learning and curriculum, psychology of music, international music education, cultural diversity in music education, community music programs, and social issues in music learning. Students also have the opportunity to personalize their academic study using the comprehensive course offerings of the entire Frost School, from musicology, theory and composition, conducting, and performance study to improvisation and jazz, entrepreneurship, and audio engineering.
