This program is designed for the individual who has already completed a university degree in another area of music (i.e., musicology, music performance, studio music and jazz, music business, music engineering, music therapy, or the B.A. in music). Students completing this program become highly competent music educators in their area of teaching specialty, such as instrumental music, choral music, general music, contemporary music and jazz. Graduates also and obtain a Florida Music Teaching Certificate. This program includes courses in music assessment, music education foundations, music learning and curriculum, and music teaching methodology, as well as certification course requirements provided by the School of Education and Human Development here at the University of Miami. Students also have the opportunity to personalize their academic study using the comprehensive course offerings of the entire Frost School, from musicology, theory and composition, conducting, and performance study to improvisation and jazz, entrepreneurship, and audio engineering. The course elective options for students are unique and diverse. The culmination of this degree is achieved through completion of a full semester of music education student teaching in a k-12 setting. Graduates of this program become music teachers and administrators in k-12, preschool, or community settings throughout South Florida, the United States and around the world. The program prepares students to become deep thinkers, dynamic teachers, and innovative leaders. Job placement has been consistently strong for graduates seeking positions in schools.
