Department of Buddhist Studies – Overview Our department was officially established in 2006 (ROC Year 95) with approval from the Ministry of Education, becoming the first Buddhist studies department in a comprehensive university in Taiwan. In 2007, we began admitting undergraduate students and English-taught master's students, welcoming both domestic and international students, including laypeople and monastics. Students engage in an international learning environment that broadens their perspectives and fosters a global outlook. The English-taught master's program pioneered full-English instruction in Buddhist studies. In 2012, the department launched a Chinese-taught master’s program and Taiwan’s first doctoral program in Buddhist studies. Emphasizing both academic rigor and practical education, we aim to cultivate well-rounded professionals for various fields in modern society, as well as scholars and educators. Our goal is to establish a comprehensive Buddhist education system that promotes Chinese Buddhism and humanistic values globally. Additionally, through collaboration with the university's Buddhist Studies Research Center, we strive to develop a major hub for Chinese Buddhist research. A Multi-Faceted Approach to Buddhist Education Our curriculum explores Buddhism from diverse perspectives, including scriptural studies, philosophy, literature, history, sociology, cultural applications, and psychology. This comprehensive approach provides students with a strong academic foundation and specialized expertise, equipping them with critical thinking and practical application skills. Modern Languages: Courses in Buddhist English and Japanese prepare students for international academic exchanges. A Global Learning Environment Our students come from over 15 countries and regions, creating a multicultural and diverse academic community. The department offers various overseas study opportunities, enhancing students’ global perspectives and intercultural competence.
