JMU University Recreation Center (UREC)


Opened in 1996, UREC is a world-class health and recreation facility which operates an award-winning recreation facility, utilizing additional indoor and outdoor facilities around campus including the University Park.

Of course, UREC is more than a place to sweat. It’s a place to learn about healthy lifestyles and develop positive habits that you can take with you when you leave JMU.

As a national leader in the development and use of student learning outcomes in the field of collegiate recreation, the department offers over 300 non-credit educational programs a year as well as credit-based courses.

UREC is also the number one provider of educational programs for the Wellness Passport program in Cluster Five of the General Education Curriculum, and is one of the largest employers of students on campus.

Forbes Center

Experience the excitement of the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts at James Madison University, featuring five remarkable venues, each unique and acoustically designed to perfection. It’s also home to JMU’s School of Theatre and Dance which provides performance venues and support spaces for the School of Music.

You’ll enjoy extraordinary dance, theatre and music performances by critically acclaimed guest artists and JMU's award-winning faculty members, students and alumni as well as be able to engage in pre- and post-show dialogues with visiting composers, choreographers, world-renowned guest artists and distinguished faculty and students.

The 175,000-square-foot facility is located on the west side of South Main Street directly across from Wilson Hall which completes the historic “Quad” on the JMU campus.

The Quad

The Quad has been considered the heart of campus during every era of James Madison’s history. Bordered by Alumnae, Sheldon, Spotswood and the Music Building to the north; Keezell, Wilson and Maury Halls to the east; Jackson, Harrison, Ashby and Wampler to the south, the Quad represents a distinctive and historic achievement.
The National Register lists the Quad at JMU as a national treasure, and upholds Wilson Hall as the Quad’s prominent architectural and structural feature which offers a more accessible point of entry to this noble space.

The Student Services Center is a place where students can go and get support, guidance and advice through a broad range of programs, services and resources as they make their transition into, through and out of university.

JMU X-Labs

JMU X-Labs is a model of education specifically designed to teach innovation with intention. Its transdisciplinary programming challenges students to take ownership of their education, pivot creatively, and confidently tackle problems that resist easy solutions. The “X” in JMU X-Labs represents the variable of discipline—any and every major is welcome.

Athletics and recreation

James Madison University hosts and provides many  cultural activities and events such as International Week in order to celebrate the origins of our students and faculty and partake in these traditions while learning and growing.

Student accommodation

First year students are required to live on campus where they have access to the Office of Residence Life. After first year, students are able to live off campus in the diverse and friendly community of Harrisonburg. Off-Campus Life Office offers support and advice for students finding properties, understanding leases and legal documents, as well as educating them on their rights and responsibilities as tenants.
