This program prepares students to sit for the national certification examination through the Board of Certification. Areas of study include injury prevention, clinical examination and diagnosis, acute care of injuries and illnesses, therapeutic interventions, psychosocial strategies and referrals, healthcare administration, evidence-based practice, and professional development and responsibility. The athletic training education program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This program is comprised of both academic and clinical requirements. Any student may declare athletic training as their major upon entering JMU and enroll in the pre-professional phase of the program. Students must apply to the professional phase of the program for a limited number of seats at the end of their sophomore year or upon completion of required prerequisite courses. Performance in the prerequisite courses is a strong consideration in the admission process.
