The future of the economy and of the entrepreneurial fabric passes through innovation. It is a strategic process which involves the organization in various dimensions, starting from the more abstract to the more concrete one which is achieved through production. The advent of the knowledge economy and the high costs in R&D have required that this activity go beyond the confines of entrepreneurial reality and combine with the various external sources of innovation (open innovation).
Open innovation does not occur by itself but is the result of the actions taken by business leaders and stakeholders of the territorial system, i.e. subjects capable of ''weaving'' the local and global networking of people, groups and institutions . This perspective requires the application of knowledge from different disciplines: economics and business management, business economics, corporate finance, company valuation, law, geography, sociology.
Furthermore, open innovation implies in itself a tension between openness and sharing on the one hand, and protection and control on the other, which must be managed by companies to ensure the success of innovative initiatives. Considering intellectual property as a driving force for this opening and not as a barrier, represents the keystone of companies that want to establish themselves in the current competitive context.
To respond to the growing requests for transversal skills of a technical-legal, economic-financial and managerial nature necessary to manage the aforementioned complex dynamics, the Ministry of Economic Development has promoted the establishment of the II level inter-university Master in "Open Innovation & Intellectual Property” (Open Innovation & IP) created, in agreement with the MIUR , by the Luiss Guido Carli University – through the Luiss Business School and the University of Turin – through the SAA School of Management.
