The complexity that characterizes the construction of architectural works today, along with the challenges of sustainability and energy consumption reduction, require a comprehensive education that enables future graduates in Building Engineering/Architecture to compete at both national and international levels.

The Master's Degree in Building Engineering/Architecture (Single-Cycle) offers a multidisciplinary training that enables the management of projects in both their architectural and engineering dimensions.

The Architect and Building Engineer is a professional capable of designing and managing an architectural project as the leader of the entire construction process, integrating architectural, technological, structural, and environmental aspects. They develop advanced skills in both the use of the most innovative construction technologies for new buildings and interventions on existing structures, with particular attention to the sustainable regeneration of built environments. Additionally, they possess the ability to address the relationship between settlements and their context, within the framework of landscape and environmental assessment.

Upon completion of the study program and passing the state exams, graduates can register both with the professional engineers' register and the architects' register. Additionally, the degree awarded grants access to the profession of designer in other European Union countries without the need to request recognition of the degree at a foreign university, in accordance with Directive 85/384/EEC.

The Building Engineering/Architecture programme is a five-year course, offering a variety of subjects, including 12 design workshops. The program is built on a solid foundation of scientific, technical, and design disciplines, training professionals who are capable of effectively managing the complexity of architectural projects and their realization. It is perfectly aligned with the emerging demands for environmental quality, energy control, and sustainability.

Graduates in Building Engineering/Architecture are equipped to tackle projects in their full complexity, ensuring:

  • Architectural design skills, both at the building and urban level.
  • Scientific and technical expertise to address environmental and energy sustainability issues, in both new constructions and the restoration of existing heritage.
  • Use of innovative and cutting-edge technologies.
  • Control and modeling of physical and technical phenomena to reduce energy demand and utilize renewable energy sources.
  • Management of the entire construction process and administration of new buildings
  • The success of the Building Engineering/Architecture programme at Politecnico di Milano is evidenced by the high employment rates of graduates, measured 1 and 5 years after obtaining their degree, and by the satisfaction expressed by employers. These results emerge from the annual surveys conducted by the Career Service and from the feedback collected during events organized by the service.

Graduates in Building Engineering/Architecture can pursue, in addition to independent practice, high-level consulting activities and assume positions of significant responsibility in the sectors of construction and urban and territorial transformation, as well as roles that require advanced expertise in technological innovation for low-environmental-impact buildings.

Specifically, the employment areas for a Architect and Building Engineer include: independent practice; architecture firms and engineering companies; public administration, with managerial roles; construction companies; and industries involved in the production and innovation of building components.

The degree obtained is required to access the State Exams, which grant the right to practice the profession. The degree awarded by Politecnico di Milano enables graduates to take both the State Exam for qualification as a "Senior Engineer" and the exam for qualification as a "Senior Architect."

If you want to enrol in a course taught in Italian, you have to prove:
proficiency in the Italian language, prior to enrolment.
You can fulfil the language requirement, if you:
are a citizen of either Italy or the Republic of San Marino or the Swiss Canton of Ticino; the information will be verified through the document of identification you uploaded to Online Services; or have a qualification, at least upper secondary school level, obtained in Italian; the Politecnico will verify the information with the school that awarded you the degree; or have an appropriate B2 level certification of proficiency in the Italian language issued by the CLIQ (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità). In this case, please upload the certification you have in the test registration and enrolment application. Proficiency in English is not an entry requirement, but it is necessary to continue and complete your Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) programme. If you do not provide evidence of proficiency in English, you will be assigned the OFA ENG (additional educational obligations for English), which entails certain career limitations.
Architecture students: they take the TENG immediately after the ARCHED admission test, even if they already have a language certificate; the TENG score does not contribute to the calculation of the final score on which the admission rankings are based.
