The Master's programme in Biology at Radboud University focuses on the biological workings of organisms, systems or the body. As a student in this programme you can choose from one of eight specialisations to define your field of interest within Biology. Biology covers a wide area of study. The programme offers the following specialisations:

Microbiology

In the Microbiology Master's specialisation at Radboud University you will work on improving health and environment, by studying, applying, and manipulating microorganisms. You will study the interface between fundamental and applied ecology and medical microbiology.

Water and Environment

This Water and Environment specialisation at Radboud University is closely connected to the Institute for Water and Wetlands Research (IWWR), a leading institute in wetland ecosystem and stress biology research. The programme focuses on environmental issues on different scales, and works to understand the stressors of ecosystems as a starting point.

Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management

Think of estuaries with sea grass fields breaking the waves instead of reinforcing dikes, or self-purification of drainage-basins, making dredging unnecessary. The Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management Master's specialisation at Radboud University focuses on finding creative solutions for these everyday problems.

Adaptive Organisms

Knowledge about stress adaptation is crucial for our society. Think of animal well-being, nature conservation, agriculture and biotechnology. This Master's specialisation at Radboud University offers a challenging research-orientated programme that covers the fundamental processes involved in stress responses of plants, micro-organisms and animals.

Conservation and Restoration Ecology

In this Biology Master’s specialisation in Conservation and Restoration Ecology at Radboud University you will learn about relationships between organisms and their environment. Through extensive research and theoretical learning, you will also learn how organisms react to environmental stress.

Science in Society

Science and technology have a profound influence on society, but the reverse is also true: society significantly shapes the ways in which science and technology evolve. However, experience shows that scientists on the one hand and the general public, government and businesses on the other aren’t always able to clearly understand one another. That is why experts with a background in science and an understanding of social processes are indispensable. This specialisation will equip you with the knowledge, tools and skills to be a professional intermediary between science and society whilst getting a broader societal perspective.

Science, Management and Innovation

In Science, Management and Innovation (SMI) you will gain expertise in societal challenges, work on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and learn the ability to speak the language of policy and business.
