The goal of the biology major at UIndy is to teach you how to think scientifically and critically, and to instill a deep value for the diversity of life. The role of biologists demands that they are equipped to research and investigate current affairs relevant to the field. At UIndy, you'll develop the skills to conduct scientific methods of analysis. Whether you wish to prepare for a career in the field right after graduation or continue on to medical school or another graduate program, you'll get the experience, knowledge and personal attention necessary to be successful. Program strengths The UIndy Biology Department challenges you to make clear, reasoned judgments by asking important questions in the research you conduct and in the data you produce. Nearly every course has a corresponding lab. You'll develop your ability to write, think critically and execute research through: Applied coursework Strong theoretical understanding of biological concepts Lab work with up-to-date instruments and equipment Unique opportunities to research along professors and graduate students Concentrations Cell & molecular biology: You'll explore cells as a fundamental unit of life, investigating how cells associate and interact with other cells, and how cells respond to stimuli. Science & technical writing: This concentration teaches you how to apply your knowledge of biology to serve as an expert communicator of specialized scientific information to target audiences. Potential careers for biology majors From researching the migratory patterns of moose, to understanding complex DNA, biology is a vast field with many job opportunities. Consider the following: Medical technician Plant biologist Microbiologist Geneticist Occupational therapist Physical therapist Grant writing or technical writing Biology might be for you if: You have an interest in the natural world You like conducting research and asking questions You appreciate diversity in ecosystems and habitats You want to enter the medical field.

Admission Requirements
5.5+
Applicants should complete a college preparatory curriculum (such as a Core 40 or Academic Honors in Indiana) and satisfactorily complete 30-40 courses from the following subject areas: English and literature, History, Foreign language, Mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, or other similar college preparatory courses), Laboratory science (biology, advanced biology, chemistry, advanced chemistry, anatomy and physiology, etc.); Social studies (sociology, psychology, economics, and government). Other English Language Requirements: A TOEFL score of 500 paper-based.
