The criminal justice program prepares students for careers in law enforcement and corrections, or for graduate work in these areas. Our program gives students a solid foundation in the many aspects of the criminal justice system and how they interact with each other. UIndy has partnerships with organizations throughout the city, which gives students a variety of opportunities for fieldwork, internships and interacting with working professionals in their field of interest. Concentrations: Criminal justice majors must choose a concentration in either law enforcement, corrections, loss prevention or cybersecurity. Concentrations included more focused study in your area of interest. Law enforcement. The law enforcement concentration is geared for students who wish to pursue careers in police departments, as well as loss prevention, private security, and other related areas. Courses in the law enforcement concentration cover criminal investigation, criminal evidence, and police administration & management. A key feature of the law enforcement concentration is the Bachelor's to Badges program. Through this unique program, you can enroll in the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy during your senior year. UIndy has guaranteed spots in the academy, and fees are included in UIndy's regular tuition. Completing your law enforcement academy training while still in school can give you an advantage in the job market upon graduation and make you a more attractive candidate to police departments. Corrections: The corrections concentration is designed for students who want to pursue careers in corrections facilities or organizations, including probation and community corrections. Courses in the corrections concentration focus on trends in corrections and the custody, treatment and rights of inmates. In addition, all students must have an internship at a local criminal justice agency. Loss prevention: The loss prevention concentration is designed for students interested in both criminal justice and business practices. Loss prevention professionals work on issues such as crime prevention, employee safety, data protection, supply chain integrity and crisis management. This interdisciplinary concentration introduces students to crime prevention, investigations, and other facets of criminal justice, in addition to business fundamentals such as finance, management and information systems. Cybersecurity: The cybersecurity concentration is ideal for students interested in the fast-growing cybersecurity field or in augmenting their skills for other traditional law enforcement and security work. Courses in this interdisciplinary concentration focus on programming skills, data encryption and data security, computer networks and data structures, coupled with traditional criminal justice classes such as criminal investigations. Potential careers in criminal justice: Corrections officers or administrators, Government agencies, Police and other law enforcement departments, Probation officers, Loss prevention, Private security.
