Sociology is the study of societies and social groups and how we relate to one another. It uses scientific methods to identify and understand social problems and their solutions. UIndy's sociology program prepares students for careers in a variety of fields, and many of our alumni now work as community leaders and for non-profits. Our program also helps you develop strong research and evaluation skills, which are valuable in a wide range of careers. Many of our students also pursue graduate studies after completing their bachelor's degree. Concentrations: Sociology majors can pursue a concentration in either community organizing or social research. A concentration allows you to focus more on a specific area of interest and further develop your knowledge and skills in that area. Community organizing: Community organizing involves bringing members of an area together in order to bring about social change and improve various aspects of their community. The community organizing concentration gives students many opportunities to connect classroom studies with service-oriented learning experiences, and helps students develop community leadership skills. Social research: The social research concentration is well-suited for students who want to pursue graduate work, especially in social sciences. This concentration gives you the opportunity to work with professors to do real-world research, including designing studies; collecting, analyzing and interpreting data; and reporting the findings. Research projects are integrated into coursework, giving you direct experience in the concepts you are studying. Recent student research projects have focused on a wide variety of topics, including street crime, prison nurseries, metal theft, a UIndy alumni survey, urban rebuilding, and homelessness.

Applicants should complete a college preparatory curriculum (such as a Core 40 or Academic Honors in Indiana) and satisfactorily complete 30-40 courses from the following subject areas: English and literature, History, Foreign language, Mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, or other similar college preparatory courses), Laboratory science (biology, advanced biology, chemistry, advanced chemistry, anatomy and physiology, etc.); Social studies (sociology, psychology, economics, and government). Other English Language Requirements: A TOEFL score of 500 paper-based.
