The UIndy English education major provides students with both a full liberal arts major in English and outstanding teacher preparation through our award-winning Department of Teacher Education. English education courses provide an in-depth study of the skills and subjects necessary for teaching literature and composition. Our professors encourage student discussion of literature and often allow students to help lead classes in discussion. Composition courses will equip you with exhaustive language skills to help you engage students and effectively teach grammar. To be eligible for a middle/high school teaching license, you must take at least 36 credit hours in English, in addition to education courses. You can complete the program in four years. To make sure you stay on track, you'll have two academic advisers—one in the English Department and one in the Teacher Education Department. If you want a career in education and have a passion for English language and literature, then our English education major may be for you. Potential careers in English education: Middle school/junior high teacher, High school teacher, School administrator, Guidance counselor, Teaching English abroad.
