Explore the topics at the cutting edge of chemistry that are most important to you and develop the practical skills needed for a successful career.

Our MSc Chemistry course gives you the freedom to choose from a wide-range of cutting-edge modules across organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry.

Advanced chemistry skills open all kinds of doors, and through our MSc Chemistry course you’ll develop the knowledge and experience needed for roles spanning manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, data science, consulting, public administration, research and education.

Whether you want to advance your understanding of the topics you found most interesting during your undergraduate studies or gain the skills needed to achieve your goals, our range of optional modules allow you to focus on the topics that are most important to you. You’ll have the opportunity to advance your understanding of topics such as catalysis, chemistry of light, technologies for sustainability, theoretical chemistry and materials chemistry.

One of the biggest parts of your degree is a research project. You’ll choose a research area to focus on and be based in one of our world-class research groups, working under the supervision of an expert in your chosen area. You’ll receive specialist training in our state-of-the-art research facilities, developing expertise that will help you stand out in the graduate job market. You’ll review research literature, conduct your own research, and handle and analyse data. You’ll also gain experience communicating your findings verbally and in writing.

Examples of recent research projects include:

  • Synthesis of Transition Metal-Based Catalysts on Nickel Foam for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Water Electrolysis
  • Investigating the role of water molecules in the liquid exfoliation of halogen bonded nanosheets using density functional theory
  • Preparation and characterization by XRD of zeolites for sugar isomerization
