The MBChB Graduate Entry Medicine programme at Sheffield is designed for life science graduates aspiring to become doctors, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds in higher education. Spanning four years instead of the traditional five, it covers phases two to four of the standard MBChB programme. Phase two starts with a six-week review of foundational topics like anatomy, histology, and physiology, followed by a deep dive into medical sciences encompassing disease symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment, with focuses on pathology, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology. Clinical skills are developed, including procedures like blood-taking, alongside education in medical law and ethics, complemented by ten general practice placements. Phase two progresses to learning patient history-taking, conducting physical examinations, and extensive hospital placements, including a 12-week longitudinal stint integrating into clinical teams across various settings. Phase three continues with community and hospital placements in specialties like paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, psychiatry, and emergency care, offering optional intercalation opportunities for research or specialized master's degrees. Phase four culminates in clinical knowledge consolidation through lectures and further longitudinal placements, fully preparing students for final clinical exams and the transition to junior doctor roles.
