The aim of this Doctorate of National Interest is to train a new generation of highly qualified researchers capable of addressing the challenges of infections at epidemic-pandemic risk, through innovative research, multidisciplinary collaboration and the practical application of research results.

The PhD course aims to deepen crucial aspects in the field of infections at epidemic-pandemic risk and offers advanced training in the following research fields:

  • Innovative technologies for diagnosis: development of innovative diagnostic techniques for the timely and accurate identification of pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, at epidemic-pandemic risk
  • Vaccine Technologies: design and development of new vaccines, based on innovative technology platforms, against pathogens at epidemic-pandemic risk
  • Technologies for new antimicrobial drugs: research and development of new antimicrobial drugs, including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics, for infections at epidemic-pandemic risk
  • Monoclonal Antibodies: Design and Development of Monoclonal Antibodies
  • “Drug delivery”: study and development of innovative “drug delivery” systems, such as lipid particles, vesicles and other nanoparticles, to improve the efficacy and safety of vaccines and antimicrobial drugs
  • Strategies to combat the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
  • Immune response biomarkers: discovery and validation of immune response biomarkers associated with infections and vaccinations for pathogens at epidemic-pandemic risk
  • Mathematical models to predict the response to vaccination, the development of resistance to antimicrobial drugs and the spread of pathogens at epidemic-pandemic risk
