Latin American Studies is a broad-based area of study, enabling students to integrate the study of Latin American-predominant languages (Spanish and Portuguese) with the history, geography, cultures, politics, economies, religions and societies of the region. The major is interdisciplinary, allowing students to study a region of unquestioned social and economic importance across the departments of History, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, and World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics. The major enables students with an interest in working in Latin America to earn a relevant degree. It also allows students to integrate study abroad programs in Buenos Aires and Guanajuato, as well as Spring Break programs in Mexico or other countries. The major also enables students to integrate their language study into a rigorous program focusing on the region and enhances students’ ability to compete in a challenging global market by concentrating on one region. Program Learning Goals Upon successful completion of the B.A. degree, Latin American Studies majors will be able to: Demonstrate a basic understanding of the political, historical, and cultural structures that define the region of Latin America through formal and informal writing assignments, oral presentations, and other assessment tools. Explain, in written and spoken form, the challenges that globalization presents to the region from economic, political, and cultural perspectives. Describe the historical and cultural contexts that led to the formation of contemporary Latin America as a region. Identify and differentiate the characteristics of the languages and cultures of the region. Analyze the similarities and differences between the cultures of the nations and sub-regions in Latin America and the historical origins that led to these similarities and differences.
