The international studies major are composed of internationally oriented courses drawn from several disciplinary and interdisciplinary study areas. Students take courses from such departments as economics, foreign languages, geography, history, political science, and sociology. Areas of Emphasis Majors are required to select an area of emphasis for specialized advanced study. The international studies program offers two types of areas of emphasis: regional tracks and global affairs tracks. Regional Areas of Emphasis: Africa and the Middle East The Americas Asia Europe GLOBAL AFFAIRS Developmental Studies International Business International Environment Diplomacy and International Security Intelligence and National Security Major Learning Goals Upon successful completion of the B.A. degree, International Studies majors will demonstrate: A substantive knowledge of basic political, economic, and cultural structures that define the contemporary international system, e.g., the enduring and evolving balance of power among Great Powers, the emerging role of transnational actors with increasing globalization, and significance of international organizations and institutions emerging from international integration. An interdisciplinary knowledge of major foreign policy issues facing the United States as well as the global issues that confront the international community at the advent of 21st Century, i.e., an understanding of the logic of diplomatic-security, economic, human rights, and development problems. An ability to think analytically about international affairs that applies the theoretical and conceptual logic of the program’s component disciplines: geography, history, political science, economics, sociology, and culture (via foreign languages). A detailed understanding of the culture, politics, economics, geography, and history of at least one of the following regions: Africa/Middle East, East Asia, Europe, or the Americas. This includes an ability to analyze comparatively the polities of regional actors and explain their domestic and foreign policies. U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 America’s Best Graduate Schools included 19 WVU programs, with Petroleum Engineering at #12 and Pharmacy at #36.
