Civil engineering is the scientific study of the planning and construction of buildings, industrial infrastructures, roads and bridges.  
This programme concentrates on the practical application of technical knowledge (i.e. in mathematics and physical sciences, and their applications to all areas of civil engineering) to real-life and societal problems. Fieldwork is mainly related to planning, designing, constructing and maintaining public infrastructure or systems.
It aims to produce graduates who demonstrate capabilities to acquire and apply knowledge of science and engineering fundamentals, possess in-depth technical competence in the civil engineering discipline to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution, and possess the ability to utilise a systems approach to design and evaluate operational performance.
Students are introduced to the current design software used and the nest practice of the industry at the early stage and will apply them in the form of assignments and integrated design projects. These technologies include Revit, SCIA, Midas Gen.  
Brunsfield set up an endowment chair of RM1.25 million to facilitate research and teaching activities in construction in the department. In addition Research activities are enhanced through the collaborative research with Ken Holdings Bhd in developing green technology for housing. 
UTAR has associated with many big players in the construction industry through internship programme and job placement. Some of the prominent construction companies are Brunsfield Sdn Bhd, Gamuda Bhd, IJM Corporation, SP Setia Bhd, Sunway Group Bhd, YTL Corporation, and WCT Bhd.
