Established in 2002, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is a leading university in Malaysia with two campuses in the Kampar district of Perak (around 190km from Kuala Lumpur) and in Kajang, Selangor (around 20km from Kuala Lumpur).

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) offers over 60 undergraduate degree programs, 31 master’s degree programs, and 12 Doctorate programs in disciplines such as business, engineering, mathematics, creative industries and design, social sciences, education, medicine and Chinese studies. All degree programs are taught in English with the exception of the Chinese Studies programs. Students also have the opportunity to learn a foreign language as an elective course in their undergraduate degree.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman goes beyond imparting technical knowledge. It encourages students to enhance their soft skill competencies through various extracurricular activities such as soft skills development, student entrepreneurship, sports and character-building events.

Campus life at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman is an exciting and diverse experience with 44 nationalities represented out of 22,000 students. Together with these clubs and societies, the university also organises many recreational and social events such as treasure hunts, trekking, competitions, debates, dances, performances, choir, cultural events, prom nights, festival/reunion parties, annual balls and more!

A Sports Carnival with a range of sporting activities is also arranged every year by the university. Students will have the opportunities to participate in inter-faculty games, intra-university races, the Sports Exchange Program, Clash of the UTARians and many more.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman endeavours to cultivate community spirit among its students by encouraging them to take part in volunteer services for the community. Q: What is the status of planned campus admission open days/tours? 
A: All the on-campus open days and guided campus tours have been replaced with Cyber Open Day. It entails live chat with education consultants, online career test, virtual campus tour, free webinars and online booth display by discipline areas and key service units. Q: How can applicants contact the university about their application? 
A: We will notify applicants by email within 7 working days after the receipt of duly completed application. At the same time, we will post the application status at UTAR website under Admission Status Enquiry. If applicants do not receive any update from us, please email us at [email protected]. 

Q: How is the university handling applicants whose exams have been cancelled? 

A: Applicants will still be considered and need to submit their final result.

Q: What advice is the university offering to applicants unable to take an English-language test due to centers being closed?
A: International applicants who do not have the international English-language test result can still apply for admission. Such applicants will be considered for Conditional Offers, whereby they enrol into the UTAR English Enhancement Programme (EEP) before enrolling for the main programme of studies. During the EEP time, they can sit for IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/equivalent and obtain the required test scores within 12 months from the date of entry into Malaysia. 

Q: How is the university supporting applicants whose visa applications have been delayed?
A: UTAR will continue to submit the visa applications to the one-stop centre of Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) which processes visa applications. However, the Immigration Department of Malaysia will remain closed during the Movement Control Order (MCO) until 12 May 2020. Therefore, EMGS can only submit the processed applications to the Immigration Department once the MCO has bee lifted.  

Q: Is the university still accepting applications? 
A: Yes, applicants have options to apply for the admission into the October 2020 intake or January 2021 intake. The applications can be made via UTAR International Online Application Portal.

Q: Are there any restrictions being placed on international applicants?  
A: No restriction on international applicants. If applicants encounter admission issues such as unable to certify the support documents, we will facilitate the process at our best level.   

Q: How are applications for university accommodation being handled? 
A: UTAR does not have any in-campus hostels. We work with reliable hostel management companies in arranging decent, safe accommodation for all our international students. Any booking will be done within a month before the arrival of the international students.

Q: Will the university make any changes to document submission criteria for admission? 
A: The University understands that many communities are experiencing restrictions in place or school closures. Hence, applicants can submit the supporting documents as listed in the application form of admission without certification.

Minimum Entry Requirements and Language Requirements

Admission to UTAR is on a meritocratic basis. All international students are expected to satisfy both minimum entry requirements and language requirements set by the University. These requirements vary with programs and levels of study, subject to the latest requirements set by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Professional Bodies.  Some programs may have additional requirements such as submission of a drawing portfolio, previous project reports, and an interview before the university decides on the admission. 

The following are the standard entry qualifications for admission: 

Foundation: Pass O-Level with 5 credits in the relevant subjects or its equivalent qualification
Undergraduate degree: Pass A-Level with 2-3 passes in the relevant subjects, or high school leaving examination equivalent with 5 passes
Master’s: Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with CGPA of 2.500 and above (applicants with CGPA of 2.000 to 2.4999 with 5 years of relevant working/research experience can apply, subject to further evaluation by the university)
PhD: Master’s degree from a recognised university and show evidence of adequate related research or work experience

Applicants with Diploma from a college/institution/polytechnic may also apply for admission to UTAR programs. Such applications will be considered on a case-to-case basis and successful applicants may be given entry with credit transfer.
