Established in 2002, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is a leading university in Malaysia with two campuses in the Kampar district of Perak (around 190km from Kuala Lumpur) and in Kajang, Selangor (around 20km from Kuala Lumpur).


Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) offers over 78 undergraduate degree programs, 2 postgraduate diploma programs, 33 master’s degree programs,  12 Doctorate programsand 4 Foundation programs in disciplines such as business, engineering, mathematics, creative industries and design, social sciences, education, medicine and Chinese studies. All degree programs are taught in English with the exception of the Chinese Studies programs. Students also have the opportunity to learn a foreign language as an elective course in their undergraduate degree.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman goes beyond imparting technical knowledge. It encourages students to enhance their soft skill competencies through various extracurricular activities such as soft skills development, student entrepreneurship, community projects, sports, and many other character-building events.

Minimum Entry Requirements and Language Requirements

Admission to UTAR is on a meritocratic basis. All international students are expected to satisfy both minimum entry requirements and language requirements set by the University. These requirements vary with programs and levels of study, subject to the latest requirements set by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Professional Bodies.  Some programs may have additional requirements such as submission of a drawing portfolio, previous project reports, and an interview before the university decides on the admission. 


The following are the standard entry qualifications for admission: 

Foundation: Pass O-Level with 5 credits in the relevant subjects or its equivalent qualification
Undergraduate degree: Pass A-Level with 2-3 passes in the relevant subjects, or high school leaving examination equivalent with 5 passes
Master’s: Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with CGPA of 2.500 and above (applicants with CGPA of 2.000 to 2.4999 with 5 years of relevant working/research experience can apply, subject to further evaluation by the university)
PhD: Master’s degree from a recognised university and show evidence of adequate related research or work experience

Applicants with Diploma from a college/institution/polytechnic may also apply for admission to UTAR programs. Such applications will be considered on a case-to-case basis and successful applicants may be given entry with credit transfer.

Campus life at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman is an exciting and diverse experience with 39 nationalities represented out of 20,000 students. To get the most out of student life at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, students have the opportunity to take part in almost 80 student clubs and societies, including performing and creative arts, sports and recreation, voluntary and self-defence.


Together with these clubs and societies, the university also organises many recreational and social events such as treasure hunts, trekking, competitions, debates, dances, performances, choir, cultural events, prom nights, festival/reunion parties, annual balls and more!

A Sports Carnival with a range of sporting activities is also arranged every year by the university. Students will have the opportunities to participate in inter-faculty games, intra-university races, the Sports Exchange Program, Clash of the UTARians and many more.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman endeavours to cultivate community spirit among its students by encouraging them to take part in volunteer services for the community. Ambitious students can participate in the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Undergraduate Research Scheme (URS) where they will be trained to conduct scientific research and work with researchers on real-life projects. UTAR has introduced the UTAR Soft Skills Development Certificate which is designed to cultivate essential soft skills as required in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, including moral and professional ethics, as well as critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, teamwork and digital literacy skills.  

Tuition fees
The average tuition fees for an undergraduate degree range between $US14,000 and US$30,000 depending on the program you’re interested in studying.

If you are interested in applying to study for an undergraduate degree at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), you will need to have achieved the following, depending on which course you are wishing to apply for.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman offers 2 postgraduate diploma programs, 3 master’s degree programs, and 12 Doctorate programs, in subjects such as business administration, mathematics, information systems, engineering, environmental technology, project management, psychology, social science, creative arts, Chinese studies, computer science and health sciences.

Tuition fees

The average tuition fees for a postgraduate degree range between $US4,500 and US$9,750 , depending on the program you’re interested in studying.
Students can apply for project research assistantship subject to availability for research postgraduate degree programs.

In order to  register  as a UTAR student, you need to accept the offer of admission by paying the fees in full amount as stipulated on the student bill  on or before the due date . Once your fee payment  has been successfully received  by the University , the  Department of International Student Services (DISS)  will apply  for student visa through the  Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS)   in Malaysia.  
Generally, it should take 3 weeks after receiving a complete application and payment. The eVAL application is subject to the Immigration Department's approval.

International students who are fully vaccinated in following categories are allowed entry into Malaysia:

a) All existing and new international students except those who come from countries listed in the banned list (please refer: https://covid-19.moh.gov.my/semasa-kkm/); and

Medical Screening Requirements 

All international applicants must submit a complete set of the Health Declaration Form to apply for a student visa in Malaysia. 

All international students are required to attend a medical screening at the registered Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) Panel Clinics in Malaysia within 7 working days of their arrival date. 

b) International students participating in Mobility and Edutourism programmes.


We advise that you carefully consider your choice of programme before submitting your application for admission to UTAR. You should avoid changing your programme after accepting an offer and paying for the 1st Student Bill, as this will affect your student electronic visa approval letter (eVAL) application. Should you decide to change your programme, you are required to reapply for the new eVAL, pay all the relevant EMGS and immigration charges again, and contact UTAR Department of International Student Services (DISS) at [email protected]
