Receiving authorization from the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, Graduate Institute of Science Education (GISE) was founded in 1986 and supported by the Dean of College of Science, Wu Jing-Yi, five Chairs from Department of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science, and science education scholars in NTNU. Our programs in doctoral degree, master’s degree, and in-servise master’s degree in science education were respectively established in 1986, 1994 and 1998. Each programS started to enroll students one year after their establishments.


Our faculty members are composed of eight professors (Chun-Yen Chang, Chen-Yung Lin, Ying-Shao Hsu, Fang-Ying Yang, Wen- Jin Yang, Hsin-Kai Wu, Wen-Hua Chang, and Shiang-Yao Liu) ,and two associate professors (Miao-Hsuan Yen and Su-Chi Fang), two Assistant professors (Jr-Hung, Lin and Chia-Hui Cheng). In total, we currently have twelve full-time faculty members specializing in different areas of science education.


By January 2022, we have 94 doctoral graduates, 300 master’s-degree graduates, and 91 in-service master’s-degree graduates in science education. Most of our graduates serve at the department of college/university, Center of Educational Program, Center of General Education, and primary and secondary schools. Some of them also pursue their careers in museums and public institutes.


Doctoral Degree Program


The graduates of the doctoral program will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge for science education research;
  2. Function as a competent instructor in college’s science courses and science education courses.
  3. Possess command of knowledge which is necessary to general education of mathematics and science.

Master’s Degree Program


The graduates of the master’s degree program will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of science education and competency in science teaching.
  • Function as a competent middle, primary and vocational school science teacher.
  • Integrate knowledge of basic sciences and education in order to fulfill other industry’s needs that reflect the breadth and scope of science education practice.

Admission Requirements

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Chinese Language Proficiency:
    • Chinese proficiency certificate at CEFR Levels B1 (or above)
  • Those who choose the Chinese-taught program are required to provide a Chinese language proficiency certificate.
    • Application without the required Chinese language proficiency certificate or scores above will not be accepted.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    • English proficiency certificate at CEFR Levels B1 (or above)
  • Those who choose the English-taught program are required to provide an English language proficiency certificate.
    • Application without the required English language proficiency certificate or scores above will not be accepted.
    • Not required for applicants from English-speaking countries (proof required).
    • Not required for applicants whose previous degree is from English-speaking countries (proof required).
