In order to train more professionals to serve people with disabilities, the Graduate Institute of Rehabilitation Counseling at National Taiwan Normal University was established in August 2004. In 2024, the institute was renamed Graduate Institute of Rehabilitation Counseling and Gerontological Wellbeing due to the increased needs of professionals serving the aging population.

In addition to a regular graduate program, this institute also set up a continuing education program to provide professional knowledge and academic research training for professionals in Rehabilitation Counseling on campus. Currently, this institute is one of the leading institutes of the field nationwide.

The curriculum consists of two tracks: Rehabilitation Counseling and Gerontological Wellbeing. To graduate, students must complete at least 32 credits, covering common core modules, core electives, and other electives. The Rehabilitation Counseling track bridges theory and practice. The Gerontological Wellbeing track aims to nurture professionals that support the needs of an aging population. Courses in this track include “Physiological, Psychological, and Social Characteristics of the Elderly”, “Daily and Medical Needs of the Elderly”, “Gerontological Wellbeing”, etc.

The prospects of the institute include: (1)Nurturing professionals in vocational rehabilitation and gerontological wellbeing who can improve vocational training, vocational assessment/evaluation, employment services, and vocational/career counseling for people with disabilities, as well as meet the medical and employment needs of elderly individuals. (2) Nurturing professionals in psychological rehabilitation and gerontological wellbeing who can help people with disabilities and elderly individuals overcome obstacles and improve their quality of life. (3)Nurturing assistive technology professionals trained by a faculty comprising experts from the departments of Special Education, Information Education, and Technology.
