The Taiwan Provincial Normal Institute, the predecessor of National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), was founded on June 5, 1946. At its inception, our department was known as the Department of History and Geography. With the institute’s elevation to Taiwan Provincial Normal University on June 5, 1955, the department became part of the College of the Humanities. In 1962, the department was formally divided into two independent units: the Department of History and the Department of Geography. Subsequently, in 1967, Taiwan Provincial Normal University was restructured and renamed National Taiwan Normal University.

Our department is dedicated to cultivating outstanding professional historians, producing high-quality historical research, and training qualified secondary school history teachers. Our curriculum emphasizes rigorous historical research, interdisciplinary training, and the development of both pedagogical and research skills, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared for professional careers in academia and education.

Currently, the department is organized into two divisions: the History Teaching Division and the General History Division. The General History Division offers four primary concentrations: Chinese History, Taiwan History, World History, and Applied History. The department has 17 full-time faculty members and an enrollment of approximately 260 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students.

In pursuit of academic excellence and professional advancement, the department established a Master’s program in August 1970, followed by a Doctoral program in 1977.
