The Research Postgraduate (RPG) programme in the Department of Architecture at HKU is intended for students who wish to pursue advanced research and teaching careers in architecture, landscape, and the built environment. The programme currently offers MPhil and PhD degrees in three general areas of specialization, including:
Across the three tracks, RPg-level academic training consists of rigorous coursework within HKU’s Graduate School and at the Department and Faculty levels, which students select based on their own research interests and in consultation with their primary adviser. Students are also trained to teach courses in relation their particular areas of expertise. Through teaching and learning, our RPg-level students deepen their own knowledge and contribute to our broader, academic community.
Our students also work to advance knowledge of architecture, landscape, and the built environment well beyond the confines of our department and faculty. The RPg programme is currently a member of the Canadian Centre for Architecture Doctoral Research Residency Program (CCA DRRP) network, which invites doctoral candidates from the U.S., Canada and other parts of the world to participate in research and writing workshops towards the completion of their dissertations.
Within Hong Kong, the RPg programme organizes a number of scholarly and public events that provide opportunities for students to present their work to peers, faculty, and the public. These include an RPg-specific public discussion series, a biannual RPg student conference, and regular events hosted by our CIB student chapter.
Through these activities and the scholarly work of our students, RPg studies in architecture at HKU help to address the complex challenges facing design in the 21st century, thereby sustaining a robust and resilient research culture that extends from our department to the benefit of our entire Faculty, students, and alumni in Hong Kong and around the world.
- The Landscape, Environments, Humanity, and Sustainability track prepares students for interdisciplinary scientific research based upon empirical and design-related methods of inquiry into the quantification, design, and conservation of our natural, built, and cultural landscapes;
- The Building Systems and Architectural Technologies track provides training in advanced computational design strategies, robotic and Gen AI-enabled techniques, architectural and structural geometry, and Machine Learning technologies. Students’ research focuses on the innovative material, structural, and technological systems to aid and enable the design and production of buildings and cities attuned to a more energy and carbon efficient and resilient future; and
- The History and Theory track equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a range of potential careers in research, teaching, conservation, curatorial studies, and design throughout Greater China, Asia and the world at large. This work is rooted in the identification of new narratives, contexts, and paradigms necessary to navigate the complexities of architectural, urban, and landscape design in the twenty-first century.
