Everyone is talking about the knowledge economy in the information age. The Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong is helping people to contribute and be benefit from it. The Master of Science in Library and Information Management (MSc(LIM)) programme is designed to prepare candidates for professional work in the broad information sector, the fastest-growing area of the economy in Hong Kong and the world, including but not limited to the library. Our programme is professionally accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), UK and the accreditation assures that our programme provides excellent preparation for professional practice and a strong foundation for anybody entering the library, data, information, and knowledge sectors. Our students are welcome to join CILIP and also the Hong Kong Library Association (HKLA) as members to keep themselves up-to-date to the latest trend in the field.
The Faculty is a member of the iSchools and we are the only institution in HK joined the iSchools as a member, along with other top-tier members such as University College London, University of California-Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Innovative teaching practices and leadership in information studies and information technology in education characterize the Faculty of Education. Its strengths include a distinguished faculty of international and local experts that teach in the BEd, MSc, PhD and professional doctorate programmes. It is the only local university with library and information studies programmes at the Bachelor and post-graduate levels. Besides a full-time mode of study, we also offer a part-time mode for this programme which allows busy working professionals an opportunity for post-graduate study. A visionary curriculum is taught using methods that put the student at the centre of the learning experience.

The Faculty of Education uses a Web-based course system for students to access course materials, announcements, and resources. Latest technologies are utilized to enrich the learning experience, knowledge sharing and community building among students. Assignment submission and instructor feedback are also online, allowing students to maximize their convenience in studying.
Students come from all backgrounds and occupations. These include education, publishing, information technology, corporate training, research, librarianship, business and management.

The programme
- can be completed in one academic year of full-time study or two but no more than four consecutive academic years of part-time study.
- requires students to complete 60 credits in their studies. Over enrollment is not allowed. Full-time students should take no more than 24 credits in a semester, while part-time students should not take more than 12 credits in a semester.
- offers courses across three semesters in a year.
- schedules classes normally on weekdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturday mornings and afternoons at HKU campus. Some day-time classes will be held on weekdays.

- Candidates with a full-time job should apply for the part-time mode.
- The programme is delivered in a face-to-face mode supplemented by online learning (e-learning). Entirely online delivery may be adopted under unforeseen circumstances, and for specialist courses requiring high-level expertise delivered by overseas scholars and professionals.

To be eligible for admission to the programme, a candidate shall satisfy both the University Admission Requirements and the Programme Specific Requirements as listed below:
All candidates shall:
1. comply with the General Regulations and the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
2. hold a Bachelor’s degree of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or another comparable institution accepted for this purpose.
In addition,
3. a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirements applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b) having:
(i) a score of 80 or above in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)#; or
(ii) a minimum overall band of 6 with no sub-test lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)#; or
(iii) grade C or above in the Overseas General Certificate of Education, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, or the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language.
(iv) All candidates shall satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination, if required.
#TOEFL Home Edition or IELTS Online is not accepted. IELTS and TOEFL tests must be taken within two years prior to September 1 of each admissions year. The HKU TOEFL code is 9671.
