University of Life Sciences King Mihai I from Timisoara

The University of Life Sciences “King Michael I” of Timișoara (USVT) is a public higher education and research institution in Romania, with a rich academic tradition dating back to 1945. It was originally founded as the Faculty of Agronomy by Royal Decree No. 2394 issued by King Michael I of Romania, and officially recognized through Law No. 617, published in the Official Gazette on August 1, 1945. Initially part of the Polytechnic Institute, the faculty evolved into the Agronomic Institute in 1948, marking the beginning of a dynamic institutional development.

Over the decades, USVT expanded its academic scope through the integration and reorganization of faculties in veterinary medicine and animal science. By 1987, the Agronomic Institute operated with three faculties: Agriculture, Animal Science, and Veterinary Medicine. Following a series of structural changes, the institution was renamed the University of Agricultural Sciences of Banat in 1991, and later, in 1995, became the Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. In 2022, it adopted its current name, honoring its royal founder.

Today, USVT comprises six faculties: Agriculture, Applied Engineering and Technologies, Rural Management and Tourism, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resource Bioengineering, and Food Engineering. It offers 26 undergraduate programs, 30 master's programs, and hosts over 6,000 students supported by more than 300 academic staff. As a Doctoral Studies Organizing Institution, USVT operates two doctoral schools: one in Plant and Animal Resource Engineering (covering Agronomy, Horticulture, Animal Science, Food Engineering, and Rural Business Management), and another in Veterinary Medicine.

USVT is deeply committed to research, innovation, and knowledge transfer. It maintains active collaborations with 25 universities across 15 countries, fostering international academic exchange and joint research initiatives. The university’s mission is to generate and disseminate knowledge in core academic fields such as agricultural and forestry sciences, engineering, natural sciences, and medical sciences, while remaining open to future academic domains as determined by its Senate.

Research at USVT is aligned with national and European strategies, emphasizing scientific novelty, sustainability, and socio-economic relevance. The university aims to strengthen its innovation ecosystem, enhance research capabilities, and ensure participation in national and EU programs. Through its Technology Transfer Center, USVT promotes collaboration with industry and society, facilitating the practical application of research outcomes and supporting smart specialization at the national level.

USVT also plays a vital role in lifelong learning and workforce reskilling, offering postgraduate programs, continuous training for experts, and professional development for educators and researchers. Its research laboratories, accredited by RENAR and authorized by veterinary health authorities, are recognized by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) under Article 36 of Regulation EC No. 178/2002. Additionally, USVT is a national node of METROFOOD-RO, part of the METROFOOD-RI pan-European research infrastructure focused on food quality and safety.
