Our curriculum combines academic courses in dramatic literature and theater arts with participation in the productions of plays from the past and present. Our educational approach combines respect for history with immersion in contemporary issues, and intellectual engagement with creative expression. You can major or minor in Theater Studies, and courses and productions are open to all Duke undergraduates. Our courses are designed to encourage you to solve problems in collaboration with others, to develop skills in critical thinking, and to communicate effectively with language, physical expression, and visual images. This focus on the development of artistic and intellectual skills, through study and production experience, helps prepare you for careers in the professional theater and in a variety of other fields. Highlights of our Program: Combination of production experience and academic coursework in dramatic literature and theater arts Opportunity to write plays Intimate, small classes with scholars in dramatic literature, theory, theater history, dramaturgy, and performance studies and theater professionals in acting, administration, design, directing, and playwriting Numerous visiting artists and playwright-in-residence programs that connect you with theater professionals Theater-focused global education programs to help launch your careers This concentration focuses on Critical Studies in Dramaturgy and Directing. Theater Studies majors are encouraged to focus their electives in the area of specialization in order to deepen their knowledge and skills. Note: THEATRST 290-5 Special Topics in Mainstage Production is an integrative experience and can be taken at any time and repeated for credit up to three times in the undergraduate career.
