Traditional M.S. programs serve to train students for careers in academic research. However, the skills required in both large and small biomedical industries require more than proficiency in modern laboratory techniques. Today's biomedical careers require leadership, communication, ethics, and management skills, as well as an understanding of the industrial environment and the process of product development. The Master of Science in Biotechnology is designed to supplement advanced graduate training in the natural sciences, while enabling students to consider other career options for their scientific knowledge through coursework in business, ethics, and leadership. Duquesne biotechnology students learn not just science, but also how to participate and lead technical development teams and how to use their background in the diverse career opportunities found within biomedicine. The M.S. in Biotechnology combines advanced training in the sciences with instruction in the essentials of regulatory affairs, medical devices, commercial research, and product development. Students learn from faculty who are experts in their field and in the biomedical industry. The program curriculum offers two tracks: One a biotechnology/pre-medical and health track which emphasizes the applications of biology to solve commercial and medical needs. The second track allows students to take a greater number of traditional course offerings in biology and biochemistry and can provide a foundation for students interested in continuing their academic training beyond the M.S. Students are encouraged to participate in company sponsored internships or through research in one of the Duquesne laboratories as part of their learning. Several of our interns have been hired by their internship sponsoring companies at graduation. A student completing this program will be prepared for positions managing R&D and product development operations within both large and small biomedical firms. Graduates have careers in laboratory management, industry quality, regulatory affairs, pharmaceuticals, technical marketing, and sales. The program has also been a foundation for approximately twenty percent of our students who go on to enter medical and dental school, as well as Ph.D. programs. Students entering the program will be required to take courses in biology and chemistry, as well as four additional courses in biotechnology. The remainder of the 30 credits required for graduation will be filled with electives from the Bayer School graduate program, the Donahue Graduate School of Business, and the School of Law (Intellectual Property Law). Courses will be selected to provide students with a customized program directed at their specialty and specific industry requirements. The M.S. in Biotechnology is designed to be completed in two years, with a minimum of 6 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. The remaining coursework can be completed during the summer term between years one and two. Courses are offered in the evening and online for the convenience of working students.
