The Bachelor's degree curriculum involves extensive studies in musicianship, music therapy and the liberal arts. A minor in psychology is also possible. The Post-baccalaureate Certification program provides students with a previous music degree an opportunity to complete intensive studies in music therapy. Both programs are accredited by The National Association of Schools of Music and the American Music Therapy Association. Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapists engage individuals in music experiences for the purpose of working toward non musical goals. Music therapists typically work with persons who have special needs. This may include individuals who present with medical diagnosis, psychiatric diagnosis and/or developmental disabilities. Music therapists find employment in many different settings, including behavioral health programs, medical hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, long-term skilled nursing facilities, hospice facilities, special education programs and assisted-living facilities. The faculty and students in the Duquesne University Music Therapy Department have developed a sense of group cohesion that allows for an ideal learning environment, and produces well-rounded, qualified music therapists.
