The Mathematics Program offers students coursework in both pure and applied mathematics, research opportunities (three undergraduate students presented mathematical research at the 2016 JMM in Seattle, Washington), and personalized mentorship by outstanding faculty. Additionally, our students are provided with free mathematics tutoring and a modern computing facility that includes access to software including Maple, SAS, R, and Matlab. The B.A. option provides maximum flexibility for students interested in pursuing: Dual degrees, double majors, and Business certificates. All students majoring in mathematics are advised to work closely with academic advisors and faculty mentors to choose second majors or minors that complement their career goals. Students in other majors can choose the study of mathematics as a minor, a second major or as a dual degree option. Each of these choices is designed to equip students with the best possible education, which prepares them for the critical and logical analysis of problems as well as the ability to design and implement creative solutions. Careers in Mathematics: Graduates of our degree programs have been admitted with assistantships to a number of excellent doctoral programs in mathematics, including those at the University of Minnesota, the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Iowa. Skill in mathematics is also valued in today's work world. Many Duquesne mathematics graduates with dual degrees in education are employed as teachers at the secondary level. Math students who also have studied business now work in finance, actuarial science and corporate tax services at Xerox, Liberty Mutual and other organizations. Skills you will acquire as mathematics major; potential careers you'll be qualified to begin; types of employers offering these careers; strategies to enhance your marketability for various careers.
