Hundreds of colleges and universities offer a Communication major, but IIT students in Communication have the distinct advantage of studying alongside students in engineering, architecture, science, and business. In this environment, you will work on projects with practical implications. At IIT, you will learn how to work as part of a team, develop the capacity to communicate across disciplines, and build an impressive portfolio with which to launch your career. As a student in the Bachelor of Science in Communication program, you can choose from three specializations: Professional and Technical Communication, Journalism of Science, and Journalism of Technology and Business. Journalism schools have traditionally been media-centered, preparing students to work in a particular field – broadcast, newspaper, magazine, etc. But many journalists – including, famously, Ted Koppel – say training to a specific medium is a waste of time in a world where the mediums are constantly evolving. Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook demand innovative ways of communicating. Wisely, IIT does it differently. We are one of the few programs in the country that will train you to be a subject-matter expert, as well as how to write solid copy. IIT is in the unique position to accomplish these goals because our journalism students learn from experts in technology, science, and professional communication. If you choose any of the degree specializations, you will be amazed at how your sensitivity to the social and cultural aspects of communication, fluency with the latest computer technologies, and strategies for information design mature over the course of four years. After graduation JOURNALISM SPECIALIZATIONS: With a Communication degree from IIT specializing in Journalism of Science or Journalism of Technology and Business, you will enter the workforce ready for any number of roles, including: Science reporter Business reporter Media management Web design Technical communication Social media Public relations and marketing The nonprofit sector PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION SPECIALIZATION: In this specialization, you will develop your writing skills, sensitivity to the cultural and social aspects of communication, fluency with the latest computer technologies, and strategies for information design. You will be prepared for many fields, including: Technical writing Technical editing Information architecture Instructional design Web design and development You will also be prepared to continue on to graduate school in a number of fields.
