Musicians who choose instrumental performance for a major should anticipate becoming a professional musician. Persons in this position should be willing to work flexible hours with an income equal to that of an entrepreneur. Keyboard pedagogy and performance majors should expect to spend the majority of their academic career rehearsing and practicing for the numerous performance opportunities here at Illinois State and at local performance venues. Among many other requirements, ensemble participation, accompanying, and solo recitals are an essential part of the plan of study. Why Study Music - Keyboard Performance? Musicians may play musical instruments, sing, write musical compositions or conduct groups in vocal or instrumental performances. To gain admittance into the music program at Illinois State one must have extensive background in music and must complete an audition. The main focus of the program lies in three main areas. They are: Music Education, Music Therapy, and Performance. Majoring in music provides students with a sense of aesthetics and an understanding of human expression valuable to many employers. Related Skills Develop competencies in business management, computers, marketing, or other areas to broaden range of employment possibilities. Develop a variety of skills. Become "multi talented." Confidence, personality, a positive attitude, and a love of music are important to success. Need basic tools of self-promotion.
