Many people do not start pursuing composition until late in their music studies. Students who enjoy improvising or learning about how music is put together may be composers. If this is you, the best way to start pursuing writing music is through a music theory course. Illinois State has an honors music theory track that incorporates several composition assignments into the curriculum. Students may also wish to take MUS 220 (Analysis Through Composition) or MUS 205.01 (group composition lessons) their sophomore year. Why Study Music - Composition? Musicians may play musical instruments, sing, write musical compositions or conduct groups in vocal or instrumental performances. To gain admittance into the music program at Illinois State one must have extensive background in music and must complete an audition. The main focus of the program lies in three main areas. They are: Music Education, Music Therapy, and Performance. Majoring in music provides students with a sense of aesthetics and an understanding of human expression valuable to many employers. Related Skills Develop competencies in business management, computers, marketing, or other areas to broaden range of employment possibilities. Develop a variety of skills. Become "multi talented." Confidence, personality, a positive attitude, and a love of music are important to success. Need basic tools of self-promotion. Performers often travel frequently and must be flexible regarding their work schedules. Gain experience working for a music publisher or other businesses in the entertainment industry. Applicants must have Earned the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma from a recognized international institution of secondary or high school level, or will do so within one academic year of application and must have academic achievement equal to a U.S. grade point average of C or better (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) in courses that reflect proficiencies in basic skill areas. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the pencil/paper based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or Computer-based: 213.
