Our History BA (Hons) offers an exciting modern, global and relevant curriculum that aims to help you answer two key questions: how do we make sense of the past? And how has the past shaped the present? You will gain the skills to answer these questions and to apply your knowledge to a range of diverse careers in the future.

Our History degree has been designed through a unique and cutting-edge consultation process involving current, recent and prospective students and is taught by a team of leading historians who have won awards and grants for their teaching excellence.

The first year provides a grounding in global history from the 15th century to the present, exploring five continents and the interconnections between them. You will be introduced to the histories of Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, Britain and its empire. Core modules equip students with the key skills of being a historian, including developing research skills, engaging with primary sources and historiography.

The second and final years offer more choice, as well as greater depth and specialisation. Optional modules typically cover the 19th and 20th centuries and range widely across the globe (including the United States, Britain, Germany, China, India, Russia, Australia and the continent of Africa), allowing you to learn about new and diverse histories as well as those that may be more familiar. You can study a variety of types of history, including political, cultural, military, social, economic and intelligence.

During your degree, you will learn to critically analyse a wide range of primary sources, which might include government documents, letters, newspapers, cartoons, photographs, poems, opinion polls and interviews/oral histories.

Taught by internationally recognised experts who are also excellent teachers, this course provides students with the knowledge and skills required for a wide range of careers.
