As the founding department of MIST established in 1999, it holds the distinction of being the first to receive BAETE accreditation (2008) and pioneering postgraduate programs in 2012. The program is built on four pillars—fundamentals, innovation, excellence, and advancement—and integrates high-impact consultancy projects like MRT Line-6 and the Jamuna Bridge refurbishment into its academic framework.
The department offers eight state-of-the-art laboratories covering all major disciplines, including Concrete, Solid Mechanics, Geotechnical, Transportation, and Environmental Engineering. These facilities, such as the Environmental Lab equipped with Atomic Absorption Spectrometers, allow students to solve real-world problems under expert guidance while supporting national infrastructure testing through CATS-MIST.
MIST offers comprehensive B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Engg., and Ph.D. tracks with specialized research in Structural, Geotechnical, Transportation, Environmental, and Water Resources Engineering. Current research initiatives include hydrodynamic assessments for coastal roads, microplastic contamination in major rivers, and land-subsidence risks from groundwater extraction.
The curriculum emphasizes theoretical and practical concepts to build critical thinking, leadership, and lifelong learning skills. Students engage in professional networking through the ASCE MIST Student Chapter and participate in national events like the yearly "CE Fest," which features technical challenges such as the truss and CAD contests.
The department maintains an excellent 1:10 teacher-to-student ratio with a diverse faculty of 33 professionals drawn from military, industrial, and academic backgrounds. Classes are held in air-conditioned, multimedia-equipped rooms with high-speed connectivity, fostering a collaborative and interactive learning ecosystem.
