The
Department of Botany was established in 2005, with postgraduate teaching
initiated in 2006 and doctoral research programmes commencing in 2007. The
Department offers both M.Sc. Botany and Ph.D. programmes structured according
to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework. The M.Sc. programme is
organized into four semesters of six months duration each and provides
advanced theoretical and practical training in diverse areas of plant
sciences, including plant physiology, molecular biology, microbiology,
ecology, plant systematics, ethnobotany, and bioresource management.
The Department currently accommodates 30 students in the M.Sc. programme and supports doctoral scholars in specialized research areas under faculty supervision. Research activities are strengthened through grants received from national funding agencies such as UGC, DBT, DST, CSIR, ICAR, and MoEF. Major thrust areas include algal physiology and biochemistry, plant physiology and molecular biology, plant–insect interactions, soil and environmental microbiology, biofertilizer technology, ecology, plant systematics, ethnobotany, and medicinal plant research.
The programmes emphasize laboratory training, field-based learning, research methodology, scientific communication, dissertation work, and independent research to prepare students for careers in academia, research institutions, biotechnology industries, environmental management, and allied sectors.
