The B.S. in Chemistry program includes most of the courses recommended by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and provides a rigorous background well-suited to those students who will pursue graduate studies in chemistry. The program is also highly recommended for premedical students. The program contains six technical electives. By careful selection of courses, these electives allow the student to develop a cluster in a related field such as biotechnology, biochemistry, computer science, environmental studies, or an engineering field. Students majoring in forensic science may also earn a B.S. degree in chemistry by taking 16 credits in addition to those required for the B.S. degree in forensic science. Required Courses Students majoring in chemistry must complete the following courses for a total of 122 credits: Freshman Year CHEM 1115 - General Chemistry I CHEM 1116 - General Chemistry II CHEM 1117 - Lab CHEM 1115 CHEM 1118 - Lab CHEM 1116 ENGL 1105 - Composition ENGL 1110 - Composition and Literature MATH 1117 - Calculus I MATH 1118 - Calculus II one Core Competency 5.1 elective two free electives Sophomore Year CHEM 2201 - Organic Chemistry I CHEM 2202 - Organic Chemistry II CHEM 2203 - Lab CHEM 2201 CHEM 2204 - Lab CHEM 2202 CHEM 2211 - Quantitative Analysis w/Lab CHEM 2221 - Instrumental Methods w/Lab MATH 2203 - Calculus III PHYS 1150 - Mechanics Heat & Waves w/Lab PHYS 2205 - Electromagnetism/Optic w/Lab Restricted Math elective or CSCI 1110 or EASC 1112 Junior Year CHEM 3331 - Physical Chemistry I CHEM 3332 - Physical Chemistry II CHEM 3333 - Lab CHEM 3331 CHEM 3334 - Lab CHEM 3332 CHEM 3341 - Synthetic Methods in Chemistry BIOL 4461 - Biochemistry with Lab BIOL 4462 - Lab BIOL 4461 HIST 1101 - Foundations of the Western World Or HIST 1102 - The Western World in Modern Times Plus one technical elective chosen with the adviser, one restricted elective, one Core Competency 1.2 elective, and one Core Competency 5.2 elective.
