Applicants for this advanced course in financial statistics must hold a minimum 2:1 undergraduate honours degree with robust mathematical and statistical foundations. Proficiency in essential topics such as mathematical methods for statistics (real analysis and linear algebra), including multiple integration, matrix algebra, and quadratic forms, is required. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate strong understanding of probability theory and distributions, encompassing laws of probability, random variables, and central limit theorems. Knowledge of basic statistics, including statistical inference and decision-making under uncertainty, is essential, as is proficiency in relevant software such as R. Understanding of real analysis, including limits, continuity, and differentiability, as well as stochastic processes and the Markov property, is also expected. This rigorous preparation ensures students are well-equipped to apply complex statistical and mathematical techniques to financial analysis and modeling within the course and beyond.
