Gain a deep understanding of the theoretical foundations of modern communication systems and explore cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of wireless technologies. This course equips you with the skills needed to tackle real-world challenges in next-generation wireless networks.

Wireless communication underpins modern life, connecting people and systems across the globe. This MSc course equips you with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and technologies that enable today’s wireless networks - particularly cellular mobile radio systems - and prepares you to contribute to the development of next-generation solutions.

You will explore the full spectrum of wireless communication system design, from the radio frequency (RF) front-end and signal processing at baseband, through to high-level protocols and network architectures. The course covers key topics such as modulation and coding, MIMO systems, channel modelling, 5G/6G network design and performance evaluation, giving you a strong foundation in both theoretical principles and practical applications.

The course addresses a critical industry need: the shortage of engineers who can take a holistic view of wireless system design - bridging low-level hardware and signal processing with higher-layer communication protocols. With increasing demand for mobile connectivity, edge computing and spectrum efficiency, the ability to navigate this end-to-end system complexity is essential.

You will benefit from access to industry standard software and hardware platforms and a major research project supervised by experts active in areas such as IoT, mmWave systems and intelligent wireless networks.

The programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and provides an ideal pathway to a career in telecommunications, R&D, technology consulting, or further doctoral study.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To meet the full CEng registration requirements, you must also hold an IET-accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate degree.
