Top universities for computer science

In this year’s subject rankings for computer science, over 100 of the schools featured are in the United States with a dominant showing among the top ten for computer science worldwide. Outside of the top ten, there are plenty of top computer science universities available, including Princeton University, University of Washington, Cornell University and University of California Los Angeles.

Canada is home to over 20 excellent computer science universities, including University of Toronto which scores particularly well in the citations per paper indicator. Other notable computer science universities in Canada are the University of British Columbia and University of Waterloo.

The UK contains an impressive number of the top universities featured in this year’s computer science ranking – some of which can be found in the worldwide top ten. Outside of the top ten are Imperial College London, The University of Edinburgh and University College London. Ireland is home to several universities in the subject ranking including Trinity College Dublin.

In Denmark, top computer science universities include University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University. Finland is home to several top universities in the subject rankings including Aalto University. Sweden's universities in the rankings include KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

The Netherlands performs well in the subject rankings for computer science with the University of Amsterdam, Delft University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology all performing well.

Romania contains some of the top universities including Babes-Bolyai University and University POLYTEHNICA of Bucharest.

France, Germany, and Italy all perform extremely well in the rankings. France's top computer science schools include Institut Polytechnique de Paris. Germany contains over 20 of the best universities in the world for computer science including Ludwig-Maximillian-Universität München. Italy's top-ranked universities include Politecnico di Milano.

Spain has over 10 universities in the rankings, including Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Belgium has several entries this year including KU Leuven and Université Catholique de Louvain. Portugal’s entrants include University of Lisbon. Of Switzerland’s entries, two – ETH Zurich and EPFL – are among the best in the world.

Australia is home to an incredible number of universities featured in the computer science rankings, including: The University of Melbourne, Australian National University, The University of New South Wales, The University of Sydney, Monash University and University of Technology Sydney.

New Zealand’s universities include University of Auckland.

Mainland China has one of the largest presences of any Asian country in the ranking with its top universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University. 

Over in South Korea, top computer science universities include Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul National University and Korea University.

Several of the top universities for computer science are found in Hong Kong SAR, such as The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong. 

Japan has over a dozen entrants in the rankings this year, including The University of Tokyo. Singapore's top universities in the rankings include National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

India performs well this year, with over 20 universities featured in the rankings. Of these, four top performers are: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

The Middle East has over 50 universities in our global rankings for computer science. 

The United Arab Emirates contains several of this year’s top universities for computer science including Khalifa University. Qatar's most notable entrants are Qatar University and Hamad bin Khalifa University.

Kuwait is represented by the American University of the Middle East and Oman by Sultan Qaboos University. Jordan’s top universities include University of Jordan and Jordan University of Science and Technology.

Israel contains some universities featured in the rankings this year, including Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv University and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

In Latin America, Mexico is most notably represented by Tecnólogico de Monterrey, while Argentina has both Universidad de Buenos Aires and Universidad Nacional de La Plata included.

Over a dozen of the world’s top universities for computer science can be found in Brazil, including Universidade de Brasília.

Of Chile’s universities, two impressive performers are Universidad de Chile and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

South Africa is represented by the University of Cape Town and University of Pretoria. Egypt has several universities in the computer science university rankings, with Cairo University one of the best performers.
