The Master's by research degree requires you to deepen your knowledge of your discipline area and develop advanced skills in the conduct of independent and sustained research. As a Master's by research candidate, you will undertake a supervised research project that culminates in the submission of a thesis for examination. Upon completion of your candidature you must demonstrate through your thesis that you have acquired an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in one or more disciplines.

Prerequisites The following conditions must be met in order to gain admission into a Master of Science degree:
you must meet the entry requirements for the degree the school in which you seek enrolment must be able to provide appropriate facilities, resources and supervision for your chosen area of research. The minimum academic requirement for entry into the Master of Science at La Trobe University is a Bachelor's (Honours) degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years with a weighted average mark of 65 or above.
(i) Entry into the Research specialisation requires possession of an Australian Honours degree or equivalent, including the completion of a research thesis.
(ii) The minimum academic entry requirement for transfer to a Master of Science degree from a La Trobe University Bachelor (Honours) with a research specialisation is a weighted average mark of 65 or above in the La Trobe degree from which the applicant is transferring.
Where an applicant does not meet the normal academic entry requirements, an application may be made for admission on equity or alternative entry grounds where the applicant can demonstrate, through discipline-appropriate forms of evidence:
That they have attained the prior research and/or learning outcomes that normally pertain to the minimum academic entry requirements for the degree, and
That they have the capacity to successfully undertake a higher degree by research.
